Large Pair of Antique Bronze Marley Horses - Signed CoustouA pair of magnificent antique bronze Marley horses of major scale. Signed Coustou, after the original 18thC model (wood plinths not shown). Francois Coustou (d 1690) was a wood carver and brother-in-law of the sculptor Antoine Coyzevox, who had sons who also became sculptors. The brothers moved from their native Lyon to work with Coyzevox in Paris where they spent the greater part of their careers. They worked on royal projects, notably at the Chateau Marley in Yvelines, which was the original location of Guillaume Coustou's celebrated Marley Horses now in the Louvre, Paris. This pair of Coustou's bronzes celebrate the human form intertwined with the graceful yet strong control of the beautiful horses. Horses have had a long history with humans as beast of burden, equestrian trophies, and also for many, man's friend. These two bronzes celebrate the union of man and beast at is best.
