Large sculpture of Cupid being held aloft by ZephyrsA wonderful carved carrara marble statue signed Franceschi, a Florentine 19th early 20thC artist; a copy of a statue by John Gibson, (1790 - 1866), a major student of Canova; 'John Gibson of Rome' became an elected member of the Royal Academies in London, Munich, Berlin and Turin, and the Imperial Academy in St. Petersburg Russia. The original of this sculpture was acquired by the Corsini family and is now in their Palace in Rome. It was so admired by Czar Nicholas when he travelled to Rome, that Gibson carved a second smaller version which is now in the Hermitage Museum, St. Petersberg, Russia; Dimensions: 39”H x 25”W x 14”D; Select image to enlarge |
